CROTCHETS & QUIDDITIES What Stamps the Wrinkle Deeper on the Brow?

چکیده
In a noteworthy 1935 book, Ludwik Fleck wrote that what science accepts and interprets as “fact” is not purely objective, but is a product of the history and underlying theory of the science at the time.1,2 Contextual and even subjective factors drive, mold, and constrain scientific inference more than we may realize. Fleck showed how scientific illustrations serve as ideograms that reflect but also subtly promote the prevailing worldview. This conveys information but also channels thought, because in deciding how to represent a phenomenon some features are made more obvious while others disappear. The resulting presentation can have seductively proliferating effects. What we see in graduate school can stay with us a long time! Fleck was not an evolutionary biologist but historical sciences may be more vulnerable to being prisoners of their theory—interpretive preferences—than experimental sciences like chemistry or physics. This certainly pertains to evolutionary anthropology, where our endless arguments about what is or isn’t visible in a fossil specimen generally depend on visual presentation and assessment. Multiregional continuity, or replacement? Human ancestor or side branch? Robust or gracile? Bipedal? Fleck singled out anatomic illustration to make his points. One example was the depiction of the surface anatomy of the cerebral cortex. Even something so seemingly straightforward shows how ambiguous or theory-dependent a simple illustration can be, in regard both to function and evolution. Interpreting past representations is problematic because we can’t really know what preconceptions the authors might have built into them (intentionally or otherwise). But the same is true today. What evidentiary criteria might we apply to determine what can, or should, be included in a modern representation?

Crotchets & Quiddities
In science we routinely assume that whatever theory we may have about them, facts themselves are things that are—out there in the world to be observed. However, it has become rather standard for historians and philosophers to assert instead that “facts” are human constructs understandable only in a particular historical or societal context. They note that scientists typically argue over very di...
متن کاملMorphological study of the relationship between solar elastosis and the development of wrinkles on the forehead and lateral canthus.
OBJECTIVE To identify whether there is a relationship between solar elastosis and the development of wrinkles in human skin. DESIGN Wrinkle depth was measured on the forehead and lateral canthus of human cadavers using image analysis. The thickness of the dermis was measured in skin sections obtained around wrinkles and stained with Elastica-van Gieson. SETTING Gross Anatomy Section, Kagosh...
متن کاملBrow Ptosis after Upper Blepharoplasty: Findings in 70 Patients
BACKGROUND Brow ptosis is a potential complication after upper eyelid blepharoplasty. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of upper blepharoplasty on eyebrow position. METHODS In this Between April 2011 and March 2013, eighty three patients (166 eyes with mean age of 49.7 years) underwent upper eyelid blepharoplasty. The patients were assessed using pre- and post-operatively...
متن کاملQuidditism without Quiddities
Structuralism and quidditism are competing views of the metaphysics of property individuation: structuralists claim that properties are individuated by their nomological roles; quidditists claim that they are individuated by something else. This paper (1) refutes what many see as the best reason to accept structuralism over quidditism and (2) offers a methodological argument in favor of a quidd...
متن کاملAxial Surface Mapping of Wrinkle Ridges on Solis Planum, Mars from Mola Topography: Constraints on Subsurface Blind Thrust
Introduction: We undertook axial surface mapping of selected wrinkle ridges on Solis Planum, Mars in order to assess the subsurface geometry of blind thrusts proposed to exist beneath them. This work builds on previous work [1] that defined structural families of wrinkle ridges based on their surface morphology in this region. Although a growing consensus exists for models of wrinkle ridge kine...
